There’s nothing worse than receiving your electricity bill and seeing it is astronomically higher than you had expected it to be. While a fluctuating electricity bill is completely normal, an unusually high one might be cause for concern.
If your electricity bill has recently skyrocketed, there is usually a reason why.
Here at DTE Electrical & Data, we have put together some of the common reasons for a high electricity bill to assist on how you can fix it.
As appliances age, many of them will degrade and lose their energy efficiency. When this happens they begin to use more energy than they did previously.
They will need more energy to continue to operate at the same level of efficiency as they previously did. This can have a huge negative effect on your power bill.
Take the time to assess your appliances and take note of any that look like they may be beginning to age and become less energy efficient. Consider replacing any older appliances to help dramatically reduce your power bill.
Many modern appliances will go into standby mode when you hit the power mode. Electronics such as your TV or computer never really turn off. They go into standby mode so that when you want to use them again they will power up faster.
These standby modes can cause a huge spike in your electricity bill. As they sit idle they are actively using power, even if you are not using them at the moment.
Consider turning these items off when not in use. It can be as simple as turning your computer off properly when you’re not using it or flicking your TV off at the wall after you have switched it off.
This will go a long way towards reducing your monthly electricity costs.
Leaving your appliances plugged in and turned on at the power point is a great way to drive up your electricity bill. Even if they’re not being actively used they can still be drawing and using energy from the grid.
Consider unplugging devices that you don’t use often and switching more often used ones off at the wall.
It’s no surprise that a shift in seasons can be seen in your power bill. It’s common to use more energy in the cooler months as you will likely be utilising heating and lighting more often.
In summer you are likely to see a spike in your power bill as well if you use the AC often.
You can help to soften these seasonal spikes to your power bill by prepping your home for the cooler or warmer months and taking simple measures such as closing curtains or laying rugs to keep your home warm.
Leaving lights and fans running is a quick way to an expensive power bill. Many people tend to move from room to room and forget to switch the lights or fans off. While this can seem innocent enough, it’s a sure way to increase your electricity bill.
Turning off lights and fans when you don’t need them will help to lower your power bill. If you’re not using it, turn it off.
Your electricity bill doesn’t always need to be super high. With just a few quick checks and changes to how you use your appliances and electrics, you can begin to reduce that bill to a more manageable amount.
