With so many electrical appliances like microwaves, TVs, and kettles being used daily, eventually, they will need to be replaced with new appliances. So, the question is: how should you recycle your electrical appliances so that they are disposed of sustainably?
If you need to recycle and dispose of your old electrical appliances, then this guide we have put together for you might help.
Put simply, every electrical appliance can be recycled - from batteries and lightbulbs to computers and drying machines.
Did you know that every year, 88% of the 3 million TVs and 4 million computers purchased here in Australia end up in a landfill?
A lot of the electrical items that we often just throw out can be reused or recycled. When you recycle your electrical items, you’re saving natural resources and are helping to reduce both the health and environmental risks that come from sending damaged electrical items to landfill sites. So, to reduce the impact that we have on the environment, to protect it for ourselves and future generations, and to reduce pollution (we won’t need as many new raw materials), it’s vital that we make a difference through recycling.
For electrical waste like lightbulbs and batteries, you can recycle them at in-store electrical retailers or at recycling banks and centres. However, getting rid of larger electrical appliances could be slightly harder. So, here are your options.
Depending on your location, it could be easier to use a collect and recycle service. But how does it work? Well, you pick a day and time that you’d like your electrical appliance picked up and the company will give you a call ahead of visiting your home. You usually have the choice between asking the service to pick the appliance up from outside or inside your home. Just make sure that electrical appliances like freezers, washing machines, or dishwashers are disconnected from the water or gas supply.
If your electrical appliance is still in working condition, and you feel that someone else could use it, you could give your item to a new home and donate it to charity.
You can look for recycling centres in your locality using a recycling hotline. You’ll be pleased to know that at
